Saints Row 3: What Happened To Shaundi?

Saints Row 3 probably would have been one of my favorite games of 2011, had I played it in 2011. Sadly I didn’t get ahold of it until January 1st. I was a big fan of Saints Row 2, and based on my expectations from that game, Saints 3 did not disappoint. I had to turn the resolution to 720×480 just to make it playable, and even then the framerate chugged whenever things got busy (spoiler: things were busy most of the time) but that’s my laptop’s fault, not the game’s fault. On the whole Saints 3 felt very fresh and fun.

I have a lot of things to say about it, some good and some bad. I guess I’ll start with the first observation I made.

The three major support characters in Saints 2 were Johnny Gat, Pierce and Shaundi. In Saints 3, Gat and Pierce are back on screen in the very first mission. Gat looks largely the same. Pierce is wearing a pretentious rich-guy costume, but he’s still Pierce. But Shaundi never shows up, not in the mission or in the whole game.

So here’s my question: What the hell happened to my favorite character?

The strange thing is that there’s a new girl in the group and everybody refers to her as Shaundi, but she doesn’t look, talk or act anything like Shaundi from Saints 2. I understand that graphical upgrades are going to cause some changes in a character’s overall appearance, but this Shaundi has a different face, a different outfit, a different voice, and a completely different personality.

Saints 2 Shaundi was the archetypal stoner. She was chilled out and laid-back, she rarely ever got upset or tense, she knew all about drugs and where to find and produce them, and to top it all off, she was a complete and total slut. She just didn’t seem to give a shit, and that’s what made her charming.

Saints 3 Shaundi is so different I refuse to accept that it’s the same person. This one is a complete hardass. She’s pushy, she’s violent, she always seems to be angry at somebody, and she doesn’t hesitate for a moment to bark out threats, even threats directed at her friends. Occasionally other characters will make jokes about Shaundi being such a slutty stoner, and there’s the rare case where she’ll allude to some past exploit of hers into the field of drugs and sex, but none of that is ever shown in her actual demeanor or actions. I get that characters can change overtime, but this is a pretty extreme gear shift, and we never even see a hint of the old Shaundi in this new one.

My theory is that at some point between Saints Row 2 and Saints Row 3, Shaundi must have died a horrible death, and since the other three dudes in the team wanted to have a girl in the group to look pretty, they hired some actress to wear a low-cut top and pretend to be Shaundi. And this actress completely misses the point.

Whatever the case may be, I’m not happy about this shift. As I said, Shaundi was my favorite character in Saints 2. She was charming and endearing, and I found her to be the most relatable character, though I’m not sure what that says about me as a person.

  1. Not having played Saints Row 2, I’ll take you on your word on that one.

From the looks of it I’d say the Saints hired Fergie to play the part of ‘Shaundi’.

  2. Is she still voiced by Eliza Dushku? That’s why I liked her in SR2.

Sadly, no. This time she’s voiced by Danielle Nicolet.

      • Well, there goes my reason for playing the game.

        • Have you tried SR3 yet? Your minor reason for not playing it might make you miss out on one of the greatest games in the world.

I can attest that he has played through Saints Row 3 and its various DLCs.

Not officially, but Shaundi IS Fergie. If anyone is a fan of Fergie they would know that her life was very similar to Shaundis. In the past, Fergie was a sex addicted meth whore. She admitted during an interview that she did lots of drugs and had sex with lots of women and men, and it was an addiction. She cleaned herself up and basically went from the old (saints row 2) Shaundi and became the saints row the third Shaundi. I think Fergie would have denied any offers to do voice acting for that character as it too closely resembles herself. Not the way she wants people to see her anyways. Just wanted to clear that up. The resembalance is uncanny and not a coincidence.

Did she become near constantly angry? Because that’s what bothers me about SR3 Shaundi. Not compared to SR2, I haven’t played enough of it to run into her, but in general. There’s an in-game reason for it, but it feels like it’s over the top, especially since she seems a bit more relaxed in the side missions and then suddenly is full of wrath in the story missions.

      • This is part of the reason why I’m glad most of the later side missions started focusing on the other, actually interesting homies.

I don’t think you should take the story too seriously. You can tell the game doesn’t take itself too seriously either. There are a lot of loop holes and the game doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. I was starting to get attached to the characters though, which left me wanting a lot more story development. I prefer games like GTA because of the story. Still a great game though, just finished it.

Fergie definitely seems like she’s always angry. Very attitudey and in your face.

Me too! When watch the cutscenes where its just the boy player and shaundi talking, i always thought they make a good couple

I think they are the same people, it adds to the effect of the saints selling out, like pierce is now a super rich looking guy instead of the whole sporty thing, that’s the whole point. Deal with it.

the only reason she’s pissed is cause gat’s dead and who the hell cares she’s hot ass

I’m not meaning this is any way rude but did you pay any attention to the storyline? The saints hit it off big inbetween saints row 2 and 3. They r celebrities and well known people around stillwater and steelport. Now why the fuck would shaundi continue to look like trash when she’s become completely famous? She had a wardrobe change big deal. And the reason she is angry all the time is because of the death of Gat at the beginning. She took the death harder than anyone else in the saints which is why she was angry and looking for revenge the whole game. I hope u have a better understanding of Shaundi now. Thank you.

Did you actually play both games? It wasn’t just her anger and clothes that changed, her voice and personality completely transformed into some sort of PMTing bitch. Also, it’s hard to completely lay off the drugs forever and lose all charisma just in a matter of years. I think volition was bullshitting us.

Who else thinks Shaundi is sexy? In my opinion she’s sexy in both games

i know same here i thought of shaundi from SR2 and SR3 as completely different people. But did they really had to name her Shaundi??? It just makes you look back at the past instead of moving on. I played SR3 first btw then SR2 after as additional gameplay, but in
my opinion i fell more for the type in SR3 Shaundi. She’s beautiful, but maybe not as chill as the Shaundi in SR2 but I like her, i found myself down in the dumps when I had to see Shaundi die…

I think saints row 3rd could just be a movie and the saints have remained the same, but their movie-characters had to be more glamourous so it would appeal to the viewers. That would explain how the some characters don’t look, act or talk the same way. I played saints row 3rd then 2, and I prefered shaundi from the 2nd game. She had more depth and stood out among all the others, also the way she would be asked if she dated the person they were looking for and when she would be really laid-back.

I do agree I think SR3 is a just a movie because i dont think Shaundi woulod change how she acts and looks just because of being famous same goes for Pierce.

She doesn’t have to die in Saints Row 3. If you save her instead of Killing Killbane she lives. The end where she dies in the “Gangstas in Space” was just an act for a movie they were filming.

I think it’s because Gat died for one and the other thing is I think she isn’t smoking Weed anymore. This was probably her sober attitude all along but in Saints Row 2 she was always high so we never got to see it.

I think Eliza dushku should be kind to gamers and come back, then they can play sr3 off as a movie but some bits actually happened; they took over steelport, met more friends and some enemies, but some bits were added like the deaths of Gat and Shaundi just to make people watch it. The enemies were fictional, but based off real gangs in steelport. Then those gangs can get there and seem entirely different and try to take back steelport, but they have “STAG”(which did happen but not everything like their gadgets and stuff) on their side fighting with them to destroy the saints once and for all.

i know what ur saying i liked the SR2 shaundi she didnt bother me but in SR3 she turned into someone else when i watch my bf i tell him go to the lucho dude rather than save shaundi i know its cruel but I’d rather loose a bitch hen keep one. if they kept her same like SR2 i would keep her alive… and yeah i love gat but she doesnt have to be a bitch saying “dont party our friend died” the others like we cant stay sad forever i am so with the guys on that…. i think she fancied gat or something

It wasn’t JUST her wardrobe that changed. It was everything about her that made her Shaundi! And even though the voice change sucked, it could’ve been bareable if they just kept her acting exactly the same as the old Shaundi. In just two in-game years though, she did a complete 180 and turned into an always cranky bitch who NEVER does any drugs, even though it’s considered “cool” and establishes street cred, and can’t seem to show even the slightest bit of respect or compassion for her friends. And Gat’s death had little to do with it; she was a bitch before and complete through the entire Syndicate Bank robbery, as well. The old Shaundi would’ve slept with Josh Burk at least a dozen times by now, especially since he’s consdiered a handsome and famous actor. This clearly isn’t the same person. She was already semi-famous in Stilwater for having slept with at least 100 people in town (a few of them probably women) anyway, so her celebrity image has nothing to do with it. Also, she’s probably seen a good number of her many exes die just from living in Stilwater, if not many more random pedestrians. Plus, her gang kills people for a living. Logic wise, her only logical reaction to Gat’s death being that serious would be if she was in love with him (and that seems dumb on her behalf since Gat never really got over Aisha, his wife’s, death, anyway. She would have little chance of being with him.) The Even still, it makes no sense. My theory is that Volution is purposely trying to get rid of all the old characters and moving on with the new ones (Kinzie, Oleg and Zimos). And they couldn’t kill them all at once, so they killed Gat first (off-camera, which was still lame, by the way), and then, later gave you the option to kill Shaundi. And since the game gives you two canon options, she’ll likely just never show up in SR4, even if you saved her, and they’ll write it off as her “quiting the Saints” or some other option in the ending where you kept her alive. If you pay close attention, there are NO remaining characters left from the first game, besides the Boss, and after they eventually kill off Pierce in SR4, there will be no one left before SR3. I think they gave Shaundi that ultra-bitchy attitude on purpose so we wouldn’t feel bad for her death or her not returning in the fourth game. That has to be it.

I only recently got my hands on SR3 and hoy boy I suddenly hated Shaundi. I mean, yes, Gat died. Yes, he was a cool guy. Yes, I know you are grieving.

But fucking quit at some point. She is constantly screaming for “revenge” and complains to Pierce when Pierce starts a body. Like Pierce, Z and Boss tell her, “Life continues”. Gat was a fucking psychopath. Shaundi isn’t.

Not to mention, what does she do for the revenge? Nothing. Just waits until Boss, Pierce and others get things ready. Then she just tags along to kill people. At least Gat was little bit more proactive and didn’t spend every cutscene whining. He spend them preparing to get shit done. Shaundi… just bitches and complains, but doesn’t do anything. Heck, she even gets KIDNAPPED twice.

I was glad that Pierce finally got credit he deserves.

SR3-Shaundi’s there for the eyecandy, and her temper is there to make it look like she isn’t. Clearly someone didn’t take the right drug during production.

I have to agree. it was bad enough they killed of the face character of sr in the first five minutes and then we dont see the shaundi from sr2 return. it was a disappoint from the start =/

First I hated that they changed everything from her and they gave u 2 choices to save or kill your enemy and when they give u 2 choices there’s not going to be another game and I checked and said there will be another so i don’t now how there going to pull off that

Saints row 3 is years after 2, the saints became more famous and Shaundi even had a t.v show so she had to clean up her act, looking more professional and staying away from drugs, her personality change was mad after Johnny’s “death”. Also she is in Saints Row 4.

    July 22, 2013 at 12:30 AM

  25. Adam

Adding on, in the War for Humanity trailer of Saints Row 4, Shaundi is shown coming out of her former self, so the SR2 Shaundi and the later SR3 Shaundi are both in the game, hopefully that will make it better

    July 22, 2013 at 12:36 AM

  26. Alex

Shaundi has changed her attitude to be more serious because they are now pop culture icons i love saints row 2 shaundi and saints row 3 Shaundi and she is always pissed at the other gang members because they are more laid back about getting revenge for Gats death, in the next game they are both in the game sooo ya plus you cant expect her to be the same its been years in between sr2 and 3

    July 24, 2013 at 7:05 AM

  27. you are so right I cannot believe they did that I totally hate the new Shandi as well she’s a b.i.t.c.h most hated character in the game

    August 4, 2013 at 9:56 PM

You guys must to play Saints Row IV, there is a surprise about Shaundi, a big surprise, really love it!!

    November 19, 2013 at 12:07 AM

  29. shaundi gets on my nerves, I chose the kill killbane ending because I wanted her to be killed off

    February 26, 2014 at 4:49 PM

  30. Nevaeh

SRTT Shaundi is depressed and has Survivor’s Guilt. (This has been confirmed.) What do you expect? I’d be pissed off and violent too.

    March 8, 2014 at 4:47 PM

  31. maal

I agree. I loved Shaundi in SR2 and absolutely hated her in SR3. Same for the boss, she was cold, brutal and brilliant in SR2, and a dumb mess in SR3. While Laura Bailey is a good VA, I’d gotten used to Katie Samine. The voice and personality change made her feel like a different character, and not in a good way.

    May 18, 2014 at 7:39 AM

  32. if you play saints row 4 you’ll see that Shaundi actually talks to her past self (as she was in sr2) and tells her all she does is smoke crack.
